FSSAI Licensing And Registration
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) was set up under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 with the aim of laying down regulations regarding manufacture, sale, distribution and import of food products. The agency falls under the purview of Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India and besides formulating guidelines also takes up promotional activities regarding food nutrition, hygiene and safety. Anyone manufacturing, trading, selling food items or running an eatery has to get the mandatory FSSAI online registration done.
The people involved in such activities are termed as Food Business Operators (FBOs) and a license from FSSAI is not only a legal formality necessary for conducting their business but it also helps in raising the credibility and profile of the brand being promoted by them. Not adhering to the rules may result in hefty fines and even imprisonment in some cases.

- A unique 14-digit License or Registration number is allotted to every Food Business Operator (FBO) by FSSAI.
- This 14 digit number is divided into five parts. The first digit informs whether the FBO is a license holder or has simply registered with the regulatory body. The next two digits are the state code followed by two digits indicating year of registration. The next three digits indicate the registering authority and the rest are the FBO’s license number.
- It is mandatory to display the FSSAI logo along with the license number on the food package label. The logo and number must be printed in a colour in contrast to the background of the label.
- In case of imported food products, the details must be accompanied by the name and address of the importer and displayed on a sticker on the label before customs clearance.
